Embrace the grey?

You know how sometimes you think out loud? This is me, doing that.  I am considering accepting that my hair is going grey and ditching the dye.  In my head I will have my hair in its current style, which is shoulder length, on basis that short AND grey is definitely going to be ageing, long and grey is going to look sophisticated, quirky and confident.  I may be deluding myself here.

To give you some idea of what I am talking about when I say I am going grey here are some pics.  Please note I decided to take these on the spur of the moment and because they are in bright light so you can see my hair colour I am frowning like buggery, fine lines have become wrinkles!!

Delighted that I actually look like a hard faced man in this one!

Please no one mention the receeding hair line!

I look very much as if I have already embraced this whole grey thing don't I!

Grey eyebrows, god I am DIVINE.

Bet that little lot have made your morning, consider them a gift from me to you - Happy Easter!

So, lovely ladies, what do you think?  Do I step away from the dye and see what happens or am I deluding myself into thinking its going to look nice?  Has anyone done this, what happened?  Did you feel ancient, did your husband leave you for a much, much younger woman, or did you feel fantastic?  At nearly  46 I think I have finally accepted that I am who I am and I look like I do, it's not beautiful, but it's not hideous either, I am in danger of being comfortable in my own skin! Shock, horror!  Any and all advice greatly appreciated!  Oh and s'cuse the migraine inducing dress, bright innit!

  1. i ask myself 'what if i let nature run its course and stop colouring' at times. I don't know what to do as well. Then i ask myself 'if i stop colouring, have i finally given in in getting old'. I don't know. Hair colour though, despite being a huge pain in the bum, is the easiest thing to change about the whole getting older thing and with a £5 packet (or two if you got long hair like me) we can change that. If only totally eradicating wrinkles, mouth lines, getting whiter teeth was that easy. Do what you feel, see how you feel about it, see if it has some impact on how you feel inside and most of all don't be afraid to change your mind about it. Even if you say 'right, i am going to stop colouring ever' no one is going to be mad at you for changing your mind in after a week or so. Do what you feel is right. Grey hair or not, I will still think of you the same. the same as if you would stop shaving your underarms or legs. xx

    1. Oh my god, how did you know about the underarms and the legs?!! The only thing I shave with any regularity is my chin and my top lip shhh! thats the most unladylike thing I could ever admit to, but hell it works! You are totally right, no dyeing is not as big a leap as dyeing, so no biggy, try it and see what happens! Might not say anything and see if anyone mentions it, just that awful growing out stage, but maybe I could use a temp lighter colour on it to deal with the worst of the growing out. As you say if I revert to dyeing no one will judge me! Thanks Liloo xxx

  2. Pushaw! You've hardly any gray! And while we're on the topic, has it migrated to your eyebrows and pubic area yet? Ha! The tales of horror I could tell you. I've actually considered getting some Betty (Yank brand of pubic hair dye ....), but have opted instead to just shave most of it off. I was going bald there too, along with the colour drainage so I figured what the hell. I know women a lot younger than me who pay someone to yank it all off with hot wax. Besides, approaching menopause means less hair everywhere, so shaving only takes half as long, and is needed less often, than it used to. Who said turning into an old bat hasn't any advantages eh!

Sorry, didn't mean to shift the focus from the curtains to the carpet. I have A LOT of grey hair on my head. About a two inch wide band that starts at my front hairline and is continually sending more out to scout new territory. I've tried twice to "go with it", but I just can't do it.

However if you think you can, go for it. You'll never know if you don't try.

    1. Jeez Ali, I had just confessed to shaving my chin and top lip, do I now also have to confess to have badger like pubes? (I do! Sparse, badger like pubes!!) "curtains to carpet" made me lol - have never heard that before, maybe its the Yank equivalent of "collar and cuffs"!! Bugger, just realised a totally wasted opportunity, my April Fools joke could have been me having a vajazzle, damn wish I had thought of that sooner! x

  3. I'm laughing a lot at these comments!

I was just going to say that I've been considering the same thing lately, just stopping dying it and hoping I'll turn out classy...I haven't decided yet... let me know what you do! x

  4. I like my white hair coming through so currently I'm leaving it natural without dye and see if I end up looking like Storm* (X-Men) or not... One can hope! Hahahahaaaaaaa

I commend you from going from dye to natural, I know a lot of people can't do it but I think white hair is stunning on anyone! Keep us updated.

    1. Aha, someone brave enough to do it, I'm impressed! I have waivered a bit over the weekend and am thinking I might have highlights to ease the transition, although I hate myself with blond hair so maybe the whole light/blond/grey thing isn't for me? I am going to go to the hairdresser and explain what I want to do and see what they suggest I think! Keep me posted on how your non-dyeing goes and if you do a blog post on it please share the link on twitter. xx

  5. I stopped dying my hair (or in my words returning to my natural colour, I was born blonde for goodness sake) when I realised that I would rather spend the £70 odd it cost every 6 weeks or so on skin care rather than hair care. At the moment I have threads rather than full on strands and that it okay as it lightens the overall look, I can foresee that when I am totally grey, I may stare back at the granny in the mirror and become deeply depressed but by then my eyesight will be totally f**ked so I won't care.

  6. I am a natural grey.I used to be blonde (naturally so) But for christ sake, I am NOT anywhere near sixty. Well 7 years off, and I refuse to get rid of my blonde...it mixes quite well with the grey (which is white hair - only looks grey cos its mixed in with natural non white hair)I have a friend that decided to do just what you are contemplating and ditched the bottle. BIG MISTAKE. It added years to her, and she has now gone back to dying her hair. She is quite dark like you. So mu advice would be. DON'T DO IT.

  7. I've got grey hair in the same places, along my hair line and it really annoys me so I dye my hair about every 8 weeks. I used to dye it more often but I eased up a bit as it was getting frazzled. My mom has never let her grey show and I'm following her lead. She has lighted her hair now and it's blond so wouldn't notice it but if she grew it out she would be salt and pepper as she calls it. My hair is grey it's silver so when I push back my fringe I look like the Bride of Frankenstein no thanks!
