Shit my parents say

It's my birthday today and as usual my Mum has just rung to wish me Happy Birthday.  The call started as usual with her singing a rattle-trap version of Happy Birthday, always hilarious in itself.  She then said "I can't believe your are 46, that's so old, are you sure you aren't 36 or 26?" Way to make me feel really good mum!

So I told her that what I am hating about 46 is how near it is to 50 and that even by the most conservative of estimates when you hit 50 you have definitely had more than half your life, to which she replied "God yes, in fact its way more than half your life, realistically 45 is half your life so actually you have already had half".  Bloody hell!

She mentioned that she wasn't loving 66, but hoped that 67 would be much better, then she paused and said "What year is it?" When I told her 2012 she said "shit, I'm already 67 - well thats blown that theory"  Seriously you couldn't make this up!

And then, she walked with the phone to find my Dad so he could wish me a Happy Birthday "Ron, say Happy Birthday to Debbie" and from my end of the phone I heard *big spitting sound* "Happy Birthday Debbie" like an Italian father forced to acknowledge the child he loathed!  Apparently he was cleaning his teeth and had to spit out toothpaste before he could speak!!

Mum and Dad, you have cracked me up today thank you! xxx

    1. Thanks Gillian, and thank you for trying to cheer me up too! I agree re age being only a number, but a bit like my weight whilst I get that they are just numbers I would much much prefer if they could make some effort to be smaller numbers! x

    2. Ooh, I'm with you on that. 8 and 27 respectively ... that's what I wish for. In reality you could probably add at least another ten to both of those!! Hope it's been a lovely day, and let's just forget about numbers ;0)

    1. Were you 46 yesterday too?? Happy Birthday for yesterday although I am sorry to hear you have hated your forties, is there any specific reason for that or are you just struggling generally, I'd be really interested to know, if you'd be happy to share. There are elements of being in my 40's I could live without but I do see every day as a single step on a journey and try to find some good in every day even if it has been, on the face of it, pretty bloody awful. Which makes me sound like the sort of smug annoying tosser you probably want to bash in the face with a telephone directory, sorry. xxx

    2. Yes 46 yesterday! Won't take up your post with a lengthy reply but it is more to do with children getting older as in adults really and trying to find my way, plus I am in that oxymoronic phase of deep angst about triviality but also not give a toss.xx

    3. I know exactly what you mean. OH and I are continually at logger-heads the majority of the time to do with our different parenting styles and the adults that share our house trundle through life blissfully unaware! Em, to be fair is an angel, Tom causes so much grief. He is very like me, totally laid back, will do the absolute bear minimum knows he should be more too lazy to even stress about stuff. I try to nurture and cajole OH thinks shouting the odds is wiser, we both think the other is wrong. Fantastic. At times I think if the kids had moved out we would never fight, reality might be that in fact we'd never speak or have anything to discuss ever again. I do think mid-40's is a horribly transitional time for women and much as I LOVE change the constant state of flux gets very wearing. And all thats before you factor in your own internal, hormonal waxing and waning. Shit! Large gin? xx

    1. What a lovely thing to say, thank you Jane! I am glad you enjoyed it, it really was very funny, Mum and I were still sniggering about it all when she skyped me later so we could have a cup of tea together whilst I opened my birthday present from them - I do love skype for making people you love feel like they are in the room with you and not hundreds of miles away. xx

  5. Happy Birthday for yesterday! Sorry I missed it - was scuttling round the Dinosaurs and Whale house at the Natural History with the smallest one as you do! Has just started reading everything in sight so was the perfect age for it - I therefore enjoyed your birthday immensely ;p xx

    1. Thank you Helen. Sounds like you and your little had a fabulous day. I remember taking Tom when he was in his "jurassic" phase, shortly after the Thomas the tank engine one and prior to the "ooh breasts" one!!
